The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. And then a bit later, someone discovered the wreckage. And I was woken about seven in the morning by my manager, Roger Forrester, saying that the helicopter with Stevie Ray and our chaps hadn’t come back. And once we came out of that, we just took off for Chicago. There was a convoy of helicopters, about five of them, and they had to go back through this very thick fog up to about 100 feet above the ground. He was in the helicopter with Stevie Ray, as were Nigel Browne and Colin Smythe of my crew. “Bobby was a tremendous guy, a very funny man. The site where Stevie Ray Vaughans helicopter crashed Aug. In the interview by Rolling Stone, Eric Clapton recalled the incident as: Crash after Alpine Valley show killed influential electric guitarist.

And I had to leave just to preserve some kind of sanity or confidence in myself.” Almost like one of those mystic Sufi guys with one finger pointing up and one finger down.

Sprawling, fiery and full of action packed guitar solos highlighted by twinkling piano riffs, the performance marked the last time Stevie Ray Vaughan would ever step onstage or hold a guitar and thankfully, someone had the foresight to record it all, immortalizing some of Stevie’s final moments on earth in a way that we’re pretty sure he would have wanted. “Where everything he sang and played flowed straight down from heaven. One of the final photos of Vaughan, snapped hours before his death. According to the musician, losing his son and the death of Vaughan taught him that every day in one’s life is a blessing. Besides, knowing that he could have been in that helicopter that day possibly affected Clapton’s whole life. Both of these heartbreaking incidents deeply scared the musician.
